WHAT’S G:OING ON?

Safety and the G:

Safety is important to all of us here at the G:. Whether you’re a regular user or new to the light rail, it’s always important to remind yourselves on how to remain safe when you’re travelling with us.

For all our passengers, please remember to hold on at all times whilst on the tram. Sudden stops may happen and it is always best to be prepared.

You never know, so don’t let go.

Each of our trams weigh 60 tonnes (when empty), which is approximately the same weight as 40 rhinos. Just like trying to stop 40 rhinos in their tracks would be difficult, trying to stop a tram takes time, and more importantly, distance. If a tram is travelling at 60km/hr, it would take the tram 42.5 metres to stop – that’s more than 9 average car lengths.

That’s why we ask pedestrians and drivers to stay aware around our track and check you back before you cross the tracks.

For pedestrians, staying aware simply means;

  • Wait behind the yellow line on the platform until the tram has stopped.
  • Use only the pedestrian crossings to cross the tracks.
  • Use only the approved entry and exit points to the stations (and do not enter or exit by walking through gardens, along the tracks, or around fences).
  • Remove earphones and limit mobile phone conversation while walking around our tracks.

For vehicle drivers, none of the road rules changed when Gold Coast trams were introduced;

  • Perform U-turns only where U-turns are signed as permitted.
  • Obey all traffic signals around the alignment.
  • Keep our tracks clear – do not queue across the tracks.
  • Tracks are for trams. Please do not drive, cycle, walk or skate down our tracks.
