WHAT’S G:OING ON?

Track tamping – Maintaining the G:

* Track works have been completed ahead of schedule. Regular services have resumed. *

Buses will replace trams between Helensvale and University Hospital station from 7:30pm to last service between 04 – 23 September 2020 (excluding Saturday nights) due to track maintenance.

Bus replacement services will run according to our timetable between Helensvale to University Hospital Stations. Please allow a little extra travel time during this time. Bus replacement services will run from the light rail replacement bus stop, which can be found on the information maps on our station platforms. The replacement bus stops are indicated by a green bus icon surrounded by a black circle.

Tram services between Broadbeach South and University Hospital Stations will run to a normal timetable and remain unaffected.

Regular maintenance of our tracks and infrastructure is an important aspect in keeping our system modern, in top condition and able to provide a smooth ride for our passengers. One aspect of rail maintenance is track tamping. Track tamping involves the use of a specialised machine that compacts the ballast and straightens the track. The machine lifts and aligns the track and has vibrating heads to penetrate between the sleepers and compacts the ballast underneath, leaving a smooth alignment. Track tamping extends the life of the tracks and leads to a smoother ride for passengers.

The tamping machinery can only operate safely when there are no trams operating on the network. To minimise disruptions to our thousands of passengers who use the G: everyday, the track tamping needs to occur between 8pm and 4am. This is the first time tamping has occurred.

Those people living close to the area may experience some noise from the track tamping activities. G:link would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused and thanks the Gold Coast community for its understanding.
