Today marks the start of Rail Safety Week, and the G:link team want to remind our local community about the importance of staying alert and safe on and around the G:
Everyday our tram drivers do an extraordinary job in anticipating motorist, passenger and pedestrian behaviour. From doing illegal U-turns, running red lights, not using designated crossings, not paying attention, driving or riding on the tram tracks, or rushing to catch a tram, our tram drivers experience a variety of unsafe behaviours whilst on duty. Without their experience and expertise, some incidents could have had very different endings.
We want to remind our local community that unsafe behaviour around the G: has a broader impact, not only on the individual involved, but on our staff, customers and the wider community. Your complacency to safety could cause a significant injury to yourself or someone else. Once an incident has occurred, we can’t turn back time. So, let us all play our part to keep the network safe.
• For road users it is as simple as following the road rules, obeying all traffic signals and paying attention when you’re behind the wheel.
• For pedestrians, only cross at the designated pedestrian crossings and when the light is green. Put your phone down and remove your headphones to make sure you are alert to your surroundings.
• Cyclists need to keep a safe distance from trams, not ride along the tram tracks and obey all traffic signals.
Take a look at these incidents. They could have easily been avoided if the pedestrian and motorist were more vigilant.
Fortunately, everyone involved in the above incidents walked away, but the outcome could have been different. Remember, we can’t turn back time and we want everyone in our community to G:et home safely. Stay alert – look, listen and obey the rules when you are around the G:link network.
